When one's immediate relative (i.e father, mother, sister, brother, son, daughter or spouse) passes away the following blessing is said: "Boruch Attah Adonoy Eloheinu Melech ha'olam Dayan ha'emet (Blessed are You, Lord our G-d, King of the universe, the true Judge)."

All others, aside for immediate relatives, say: "Boruch Dayan ha'emet (Blessed is the true Judge)." Even when we are in mourning we accept G-d's judgment and realize that all His ways are just.

G-d
It is forbidden to erase or deface the name of G-d. It is therefore customary to insert a dash in middle of G-d's name, allowing us to erase or discard the paper it is written on if necessary.
