Is it permitted to watch TV during shivah?

It is inappropriate to watch television during Shivah, because during this period one is not supposed to distract oneself from mourning. After Shivah, for the rest of the mourning period, it is permitted to watch the news or other non-entertainment programs.1

  • 1. It is questionable whether many (if not most) TV programs may be watched at all, due to issues such as modesty, heresy, idolatry, etc. This article is referring specifically to a program that would otherwise be Halachacally permissible.
