What do I bring to a house when they are sitting shivah?

Generally you would not bring anything to someone sitting shivah as it is not an appropriate time for gifts. Some people do bring food to the house especially if the person sitting shivah lives alone. However, if the person keeps Kosher, it is best only to take fresh fruit.

The purpose of going to visit is simply to sympathize with the person in mourning.

Kosher
Literally means "fit." Commonly used to describe foods which are permitted by Jewish dietary laws, but is also used to describe religious articles (such as a Torah scroll or Sukkah) which meet the requirements of Jewish law.
