Why doesn't the bride wear any jewelry to the chupah?

Actually, the groom, too, is not supposed to be wearing any jewelry during the wedding ceremony, and the symbolism behind this custom is very interesting.

When a couple gets married, it is important for them to realize that they are getting married to the other person for who he/she is, and not for what he/she possesses.

There is also a Halachic reason for this custom. Unless one is a jeweler, it is difficult to accurately assess and evaluate jewelry. The fear is that the groom might see on the bride (or vice versa) a piece of jewelry which he thinks is valuable, and in his mind he will be thinking “I’m glad I’m marrying such a wealthy woman.” If the jewelry doesn’t turn out to be as valuable as thought, this could actually put in doubt the validity of the marriage.
