Here's my mother's recipe:

1 small onion, cut into small pieces
1 tsp oil
2 Tbs barley
2 Tbs kidney beans
2 Tbs lima beans
5-6 potatoes, cut into chunks
2 pounds stew meat, cheek meat, or flanken
4 cloves garlic
Paprika
Salt Pepper
Water to cover

Saute onion in oil until lightly browned. add remaining ingredients and bring to boil. Put in crock pot or simmer on stove,1 covered, on low.

Footnotes

  • 1. It is customary not to place food directly on a flame on Shabbat. Instead the stove-top is covered with a sheet of hard aluminum (known as a "blech"), and the pot is place upon the aluminum (see "Why is the stove covered with a sheet of hard aluminum on Shabbat?" http://www.askmoses.com/article.html?h=208&o=89561).
