Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, one of the most prominent Halachic experts of the 20th century, maintains that it is a "maaseh hedyot (an activity which doesn't require expertise)" and is therefore permissible as long as you are typing for a need of Yom Tov. In other words, you cannot type an essay which you need for schoolwork for after Yom Tov.
