A Jewish name is so special it is given through a special ceremony. For a male that ceremony is Brit Milah, circumcision.1

If you did not have a Halachic circumcision (and were therefore not given a Jewish name), there is a minimal procedure that is done under such circumstances called "Hatafat Dam Brit", and at that time you will receive your Jewish name. This procedure is quite common and almost painless (speak to your rabbi for more details).

Similarly if you did not have a circumcision at all, speak to your local rabbi or check out www.brityy.com to arrange an adult circumcision, at which time you will receive your Jewish name.

[Ed. note: also read "Having a Jewish Name"]

Footnotes

  • 1. For females it is through a special prayer recited in the presence of the Torah.
