Rabbi Isser Weisberg: Welcome. I'll be with you in a moment...what's on your mind?

Matityahu: Brit milah. It's quite personal.

Matityahu: I'm currently religious, but was raised in a secular family. I was supposed to be circumcised, but I was quite ill when I was born, and since my family was secular, they just never bothered.

Matityahu: I've kinda hidden it for most of my life, but now I am realizing that hiding it is pretty stupid... But not sure what to do.

Matityahu: I had a really good experience going to brit milah of a friend's friend's kid. I realized that it's SO important!

Rabbi Isser Weisberg: Indeed, cirumcision is a great Mitzvah and there is no reason you should be deprived of it. You could arrange to have it done at once.

Matityahu: How?!

Rabbi Isser Weisberg: There are experienced mohels who circumcise adults.

Matityahu: I mean, I can't go to any of my rabbis cuz it is too embarrassing.

Rabbi Isser Weisberg: No one has to know besides for you and the Mohel.

Matityahu: mmm... but it's also painful, no?

Rabbi Isser Weisberg: No, it's done with a painkiller and is painless.

Rabbi Isser Weisberg: You can check out www.brityy.org, and if you want I can find out the names of the mohels in your area.

Matityahu: That would be useful.

Rabbi Isser Weisberg: Where do you live?

Matityahu: ...... usually. But in ......... at the moment

Rabbi Isser Weisberg: How long are you going to be there?

Matityahu: Another week or so, and then back to ...........

Rabbi Isser Weisberg: Okay, I will try to find out who does adult circumcisions in .................., and I'll e-mail you the names and phone numbers.

Matityahu: Okay. Sure.

Rabbi Isser Weisberg: What's your e-mail address?

Matityahu: ...........@...........

Matityahu: By when can you find out? Roughly?

Rabbi Isser Weisberg: I will try tomorrow to contact someone in ..........

Matityahu: OK, cool.

Matityahu: Thanx. I appreciate it a lot. Shavua tov.

Rabbi Isser Weisberg: U2.

How come only semitic nations have that tradition?

Editor's Comment

Because the mitzvah (command) of circumcision was given to Abraham, the ancestor of "Semitic" nations.

Adult Circumcision

Posted by: Daniel Benjamin, Bradenton, FL on May 23, 2006

I just wanted to add another perspective, probably the rarest and most precious possible perspective, to the adult circumcision comments... that of one who has experienced a bris milah as an adult.

In January 2006, after a disappointing online search, I came to this site to inquire about mohelim capable of assisting an adult. The Rabbi with whom I chatted referred me to Rabbi Israel Heller (www.mohel.com), who in turn connected me with Brit Yosef Yitzchak, (brityy.org), a Chabad organization that exists to provide a bris milah to Jews who have omitted this crucial mitzvah, for one reason or another.

To make a long story short (I don't have many characters left) I had my bris milah on February 5th 2006, at age 29 and the experience was overwhelmingly positive. Discomfort was negligible, and I drove myself home from the bris (nearly 300 miles). My brother, who was there for my bris, was so impressed that he followed suit on the spot.

Thank you so very much for your great info.
