A boy is normally named at his circumcision. However, if the child is sick (the Brit is delayed) and there is a need for a name to be able to pray on the child's behalf, a name can be given at an earlier time at an occasion when the father receives an Aliyah. In the case of a firstborn son who has not yet had a brit, the name is usually given at the Pidyon Haben.
