It is a great Mitzvah1 to be present at a Brit and partake in the festive meal. Some say that in honor of this great mitzvah, and out of respect for Elijah the Prophet who attends every circumcision, all those who are present at the Brit are purified from their sins!

Footnotes

  • 1. This mitzvah is so great to the extent that many have a custom not to "invite" people to a Brit; instead they only "notify" them about it. This way if a person can't come s/he is not "turning down" an invitation to partake in a Mitzvah.
