Rabbi Yossi Turk: Bienvenidos Welcome. Un minuto, ya lo atiendo. I'll be with you in a moment...

Gramps: Good Morning, Rabbi. My question concerns baby naming.

Rabbi Yossi Turk: Good morning and Mazal tov.

Gramps: My question has to do with the naming of a sibling. Is it proper to name two children from the same parents after the same deceased grandparent?

Rabbi Yossi Turk: With the same name?

Gramps: Not with the same name, but using the same letter. Example: The grandparent's name was Rachel. The first born was named Rick. The second child will be arrive in October, (gender unknown) and the parents want to use the letter R for the second child.

Rabbi Yossi Turk: Sure that’s ok. As long as the actual name is different.

Gramps: Thank you for your quick response.

Gramps: How about the Hebrew name, is it OK to name the second child with the same Hebrew name as the first?

Rabbi Yossi Turk: Same first letter, different name?

Gramps: Yes.

Rabbi Yossi Turk: Perfect.

Gramps: Thank you again. I will relate your information to my daughter and son-in-law.

Rabbi Yossi Turk: Mazal tov again.

Rabbi Yossi Turk: An easy birth and much nachas.

Rabbi Yossi Turk: Bye.

...I was named Chaya in memory of a male family member, (because it was the feminine version of the name,) and my brother was named Chaim when he came along later. Is this wrong? By the way, because I know that at times, the answers to such questions depend on lineage, we are of Middle Eastern origin.

Editor's Comment

Absolutely nothing wrong with such a practice.
