After the Birth of a Boy:
When a father hears about the birth of his son, he recites the blessing of "Hatov V'Hametiv" [Blessed are You... who is good and does good]. After the mother is able to wash her hands she recites the blessing of Shehecheyanu.
After the Birth of a Girl:
Following the birth of a daughter, the father (upon seeing his daughter) recites the blessing of Shehecheyanu. After the mother is able to wash her hands, she too recites the blessing of Shehecheyanu.
It is also customary to place Psalm 121 near the wife during labor, and afterwards in the baby's cradle, for protection. Please click here for a copy of the Psalm.
Additionally, some have the custom to recite the "Modeh ani" prayer with the newborn.

[Ed. note: There are various customs regarding the blessings after birth. Askmoses.com offers general Jewish information, and does not issue Halachic rulings. To find out the custom practiced in your community speak to a local Rov].
