The sea which Moses parted is the sea which is known today as the Red Sea. The Hebrew name for this sea is "Yam Suf," which translates to "Sea of Reeds."

Red Sea Splitting

Posted by: Sheryl on Jan 17, 2005

God split the Red Sea. Moses was merely the messenger, the deliverer whom God chose. Shalom.

Correct. There is a Talmudic dictum: "The wine belongs to the host, but 'thank you' is [still] said to the waiter."

Red Sea or Sea of Reeds?

Posted by: Michael Makovi on Jan 28, 2006

My thinking is that probably what we crossed was a papyrus marsh (papyrus = reeds, and papyrus grows in marshes), which would be very different from a sea in terms of depth and composition of the water. Of course, it practically means very little; whatever body of water it was, G-d split it, and that's enough for me!

Would such a marsh be deep and powerful enough to drown the entire Egyptian army?
Moses
[Hebrew pronunciation: Moshe] Greatest prophet to ever live. Led the Jews out of Egyptian bondage amidst awesome miracles; brought down the Tablets from Mount Sinai; and transmitted to us word-for-word the Torah he heard from G-d's mouth. Died in the year 1272 BCE.
