Finding a spouse is a process of finding a soul mate. We are taught that the souls of husband and wife derive from a common spiritual soul-essence; it is this shared soul-root one should try to sense. This sense is the most substantive, most essential type of insight there is.

In most cases, love is born in the heart only after this initial flash of insight has ripened in the mind’s womb, and the fully developed intellectual idea is assimilated into one’s existing consciousness. This is accomplished through deliberate, considered meditation: just as a fetus requires time to grow and develop healthily, so consciousness needs time to fully understand this new, life-changing insight. Since the average mind and its habitual thought-patterns are not fully refined, the introduction of a new element of truth requires that the entire existing mental structure be re-evaluated and reconstructed in its light—and this takes time. This is why love that grows surely and steadily is generally the rule in stable, lasting relationships.

One may experience love at “first sight,” of course: love may appear simultaneously with the initial insight and have no need for the time-lapse typically required for it to develop and bear fruit. This can happen in one of two ways:

When one receives the insight, it overtakes his entire consciousness to the point where his self-awareness is temporarily erased. If the experience of love based on this insight shares the same non-self-awareness and non-self-orientation (bitul) that accompanies the flash of insight, it is barely experienced as an “emotion” in the conventional sense of the word. In such a case, it can shine in all its intensity, with the same brilliance as the original, pristine insight. The essence of the love-experience can in this case be said to be contained within the mind’s eye of insight—as if to say that the heart has “risen” into the eyes.

Or, the seed of love can develop in the womb of the mind before being born at the level of the heart, as it normally does, but without requiring any time at all. Here, the love is experienced as an emotion of the heart, but one’s mind is so refined that the emotion expresses itself and flows out of the mind freely and naturally. The self produces no “friction” to slow the birth process of the emotions from the mind.

In the messianic era, both the relationship between husband and wife and that between G-d and the Jewish people will be constant love at first sight. Reality will be so refined that the friction of self-orientation that characterizes the present order will no longer exist. Seeing clearly their true spiritual unity, G-d and the Jewish people (and every individual couple) will immediately and constantly fall in love. Paradoxically, this continuous state of romantic passion will be fully integrated with the settled, stable, normative love that characterizes mature and seasoned relationships.

(pl: Shabbatot). Hebrew word meaning "rest." It is a Biblical commandment to sanctify and rest on Saturday, the seventh day of the week. This commemorates the fact that after creating the world in six days, G-d rested on the seventh.
The Messiah. Moshiach is the person who will usher in an era of peace and tranquility for all of humanity when there will be no jealousy or hate, wars or famine. This is a fundamental Jewish belief.
It is forbidden to erase or deface the name of G-d. It is therefore customary to insert a dash in middle of G-d's name, allowing us to erase or discard the paper it is written on if necessary.
