In order to be granted forgiveness for a sin against a fellow man or woman, one must first (make restitution when applicable) placate and ask for forgiveness from the one whom was victimized1 .

However, a sin against a fellow is a betrayal of G-d as well; for G-d has commanded us to be respectful and considerate of our fellow's property and feelings. Therefore, On Yom Kippur - after pacifying the offended party beforehand - we confess, repent, and ask G-d for forgiveness for all our sins.

Yom Kippur
Day of Atonement. This late-autumn high-holiday is the holiest day of the year. We devote this day to repentance and all healthy adults are required to fast.
G-d
It is forbidden to erase or deface the name of G-d. It is therefore customary to insert a dash in middle of G-d's name, allowing us to erase or discard the paper it is written on if necessary.
