A few years ago I met and befriended a local businessman. I visit his workplace every week or so, we chat about our respective families, swap a joke or two and then I whip out the Tefillin.

His family was never religious back in Israel. He told me that growing up on the kibbutz, the only way he knew it was Yom Kippur was by the absence of other cars on the highway as he made his way to the beach. When he got here he drifted into friendships with other Jews more out of social convenience than fidelity to tradition. He brissed and bar Mitzvah’d his kids to please his in-laws, but that was about as far as Judaism went in his life.

But you reach a certain age and you start to wonder. He wasn’t actively searching, but by the time I started popping in he had unbent enough to be willing to engage me in conversation about Life, the Universe and Everything. Took another six months before he felt comfortable with Tefillin, but by now he does that too, and enjoys it.

Last week I overreached. He’d fallen into a routine; strapping on, saying the first chapter of Shma and then strapping off. A five-minute diversion from his working day and he feels good for the rest of the week. This time he was on a roll and started reciting the second paragraph as well.

As a native Hebrew speaker he understood what he was saying. He stopped short, backtracked, confirmed that which he thought he’d read and then handed back the Siddur. He didn’t like the notion of threats and warning that are enumerated in the section.

It is not unreasonable to point out that for every action there must be a reaction.
If you go in my ways I will look after you… and if you turn away from me, I will make you suffer.

Paraphrased, this is the substance of the second chapter of Shma, but it didn’t work for him. He’d been brought up to believe that you should do the right thing for no other reason than knowing it is right. Over time he had independently been attracted to authentic Judaism, but suddenly couldn’t stomach the threats implicit in the text. This was the first time he’d realised that a stick accompanies the carrots of our faith.

Mitzvah
(pl. Mitzvot). A commandment from G-d. Mitzvah also means a connection, for a Jew connects with G–d through fulfilling His commandments.
Torah
Torah is G–d’s teaching to man. In general terms, we refer to the Five Books of Moses as “The Torah.” But in truth, all Jewish beliefs and laws are part of the Torah.
Tefillin
Black leather boxes containing small scrolls with passages of the Bible written on them. Every day, aside for Sabbath and Jewish holidays, the adult Jewish male is required to wrap the Tefillin--by means of black leather straps--around the weaker arm and atop the forehead.
Yom Kippur
Day of Atonement. This late-autumn high-holiday is the holiest day of the year. We devote this day to repentance and all healthy adults are required to fast.
Rebbe
A Chassidic master. A saintly person who inspires followers to increase their spiritual awareness.
Hashem
"The Name." Out of respect, we do not explicitly mention G-d's name, unless in the course of prayer. Instead, "Hashem" is substituted.
Rambam
Acronym for Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, widely known as Maimonides. Born in Spain in 1135, died in Egypt in 1204. Noted philosopher and authority on Jewish law. Also was an accomplished physician and was the personal doctor for members of the Egyptian royalty. Interred in Tiberius, Israel.
Siddur
Prayer book.
Ger
A convert to Judaism.
G-d
It is forbidden to erase or deface the name of G-d. It is therefore customary to insert a dash in middle of G-d's name, allowing us to erase or discard the paper it is written on if necessary.
