Question:

My rabbi says it will cost $500 to get me Tefillin, but it's much cheaper in a gift shop!

Answer:

Many tefillin sold in gift shops are often no more than fair simulations. Tefillin must be purchased from a reliable source who can assure you that they have been checked by someone G-d fearing and competent in Halachah. If someone offers you tefillin in the USA today for less than $300, some questions need to be asked.

On the high end, a beautiful quality pair of tefillin can cost up to $1000. The price of the tefillin is determined by the quality of the hide and parchment used, and the beauty of the writing on the scrolls inside the boxes.

Jewish Law. All halachah which is applicable today is found in the Code of Jewish Law.
Tefillin
Black leather boxes containing small scrolls with passages of the Bible written on them. Every day, aside for Sabbath and Jewish holidays, the adult Jewish male is required to wrap the Tefillin--by means of black leather straps--around the weaker arm and atop the forehead.
G-d
It is forbidden to erase or deface the name of G-d. It is therefore customary to insert a dash in middle of G-d's name, allowing us to erase or discard the paper it is written on if necessary.
