Is it permissible and desirable to use stimulants (alcohol, etc.) to get happy?

True happiness comes from deep within, and results from a stable emotional and spiritual state of mind. Anytime anything external is used to bring about happiness, the result will be temporary at best, and non-existent at worse. This is true even when the cause of happiness is another person or experience, for if that is the reason for the happiness, then when the person or situation leaves, the happiness will fade away. So much more so with stimulants, such as alcohol, which are merely foreign elements being introduced into one’s body to provide a certain reaction. Just as everything that goes up must come down, so too, when a chemical reaction that results in an emotional high, which could be described as happiness, the counter-reaction will be the down side, the low, which will be a state of depression. Alcohol, although it may temporarily make one feel giddy and happy, is considered a depressant, since it ultimately results in someone feeling worse, not better.

One must remember that happiness will come only when one feels fulfilled and satisfied within. Unfortunately, we often fall for traps of believing that if we only had money, or certain physical objects, then we would be happy. Yet, people who are constantly grasping for items to feel better are never satisfied, as nothing can replace a sense of completeness that must be accomplished from within. Only when we reach a place in our hearts and minds where we are stable and comfortable with whom we are, where we are heading, and what we are doing, can we call ourselves happy. And when we are happy, the last thing we want is to escape that feeling, which is exactly what a stimulant does. So when truly happy, stimulants would be the last thing one would desire.

For a slightly different spin on this subject, see I heard that you’re supposed to get drunk on Purim. Isn’t it a bad thing to get drunk?
