What is the Jewish view on a woman having a career?

If a woman wants to have a career that is her choice.

Nowhere in Halachah (Jewish law) is it stated that a woman cannot have a job. In fact, in the book of Proverbs1 King Solomon actually praises the business acumen of the good wife.

However, the question of whether a woman should want, have, or feel obligated to have, a career, is not a textbook decision, but a decision left up to each woman, her husband and family.

The important thing is to remember one’s priorities: family first, career second.

A woman once told the Lubavitcher Rebbe she wants to become a typist. The Rebbe told her if you want to type to earn money that is fine, but don’t “become a typist”, remain a mother, who happens to type.
