Do a wife's earnings belong to her husband?

According to the Torah, a man does not automatically have a right to his wife's earnings. However, the rabbis instituted that since the husband is obligated to feed, clothe and provide housing for his wife it is only fitting that he should be the beneficiary of her earnings.

It should be noted that even after the rabbis established this rule, if a woman wishes, she has the right to tell her husband, "I will support myself and I will keep my earnings."
