Every letter in the Hebrew alphabet has a numerical value. Aleph is one, Bet is two, Yud is ten, Kuf is one hundred, etc. 1

The numerical equivalent of the word "chai [life]" is eighteen (chet = 8, and yud = 10).

The Number 18

Posted by: Shmuel, Far Rockaway, NY on Jul 10, 2005

... and therefore? So what if it equals "chai"? Why not "68" for "Chaim"?

(The Kotzker vort is, "Why do people always give 'Chai' dollars? Give 'Meis' [Ed. note: "death"] [which equals 440, as opposed to Chai, which equals only 18]!!")
