Yud=Chochmah. This is because Chochmah is a seminal point, which can be likened to the letter yud, which is just a point.

Hey=Binah. Binah is the expansion of Chochmah, which can be likened to the length, width and depth of the letter Hey.

Vov=The six emotions: Chessed, Gevurah, Tiferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod. Vov is numerically equivalent to six. Also, the length of the letter vov represents drawing down of the intellect into the emotions.

Hey=Malchut, the broadened dissemination of the idea.

Rabbi Mattis Kantor calls this the four-step process: Contraction, Expansion, Extension, Expansion.
