1 Moshe's family named him six names: Yered, Chaver, Yekutiel, Avigdor, Avi-Socho, and Avi-Zonoach.

Moshe's adoptive mother, Bitya (the daughter of Pharaoh who converted to Judaism) gave him his seventh name, 'Moshe', in reference to her 'drawing' him out of the water. [The Hebrew word to ''pull' or 'draw out' is the root of the name 'Moshe'.]

Footnotes

  • 1. The Midrash (Vayikra Rabah 1:3) teaches that he had ten names altogether - Moshe, Yered, Chaver, Yekutiel, Avigdor, Avi Socho, Avi Zanuach, Tuviah, Shemayah, and Halevi.
